Breakers by Doug Johnstone - Blog Tour Review

Seventeen-year-old Tyler lives in one of Edinburgh's most deprived areas. Whilst trying to care for his little sister and his drug-addicted mother, he's also coerced into robbing rich people's homes by his bullying older siblings.

One night whilst on a job, his brother Barry stabs a home owner and leaves her for dead. And that's just the beginning of their nightmare, because they soon discover the woman is the wife of Edinburgh's biggest crime lord, Deke Holt.

With the police and the Holts closing in, and his shattered family in terrible danger, Tyler is running out of options, until he meets posh girl Flick in another strangers house. Could she be his salvation? Or will he end up dragging her down with him?

My Review

I haven't read any of Doug Johnstone's work before, but I am so glad I chose to read Breakers! Once I picked it up, I was drew into the story he created. It is a gritty and at times an emotional read.

For me Tyler's character has two sides, one was a doting big brother who would do anything for his little sister. The other side was a burglar who breaks into strangers homes with his half brother and sister. Although he doesn't actually have much choice in whether to lead a life of crime or not. I was rooting for Tyler from the beginning, he isn't happy living his life the way he is and wants out. His half brother Barry is a very domineering character and bullies everyone. He expects his family to do exactly what he says, when he says.

I really loved the relationship Tyler had with his little sister, Bean. They don't have it easy with their mum being a drug addict. But Tyler does everything he can to try and make sure she is happy and taken care of. He tries to make her life as normal as possible.

When Flick comes onto the scene, Tyler's life takes another turn. She goes to a posh school but is somewhat of a rebel. They shouldn't make sense together, but they do and I just loved that!

If you like gritty, tense reads this is a must read. I am definitely going to be adding Doug Johnstones other books to my reading list.
