Book Review - Cross Her Heart/Sarah Pinborough

Cross Her Heart book cover
'Cross my heart and hope to die...'

Promises only last if you trust each other, but what if one of you is hiding something?

A secret no one could ever guess.

Someone is living a lie.

Is it Lisa?

Maybe it's her daughter, Ava.

Or could it be her best friend, Marilyn?

Review

Where to start with this book! It starts off quite slow with the usual difficult mother/teenage daughter relationship. Then all of a sudden you are thrown into this whirlwind of twists and turns and an unravelling of a troubled history.

I wasn't too keen on the character of Lisa at first, she seemed to be slightly obsessed with her 16 year old daughter and what she was doing etc. But as with most things there are reasons for this, which become evident by the end of the novel. I think my favourite character was Lisa's workmate who, despite her own problems, had a lot of time for her friend.
I did find some parts of the back story quite upsetting, especially the parts featuring Daniel. The story is told from different characters perspectives and goes back and forth between past and present. I felt the characters and story were well-written, and is the case with these type of books a bit far fetched (not that I am complaining about far-fetched stories).

The final reveal was something I didn't see coming and I challenge anyone to read this and guess what the outcome is. I changed my mind a few times whilst reading, which for me is a sign of a good thriller.

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the chance to read and review this novel.
