Bible John - Unsolved Murders

In Scotland between 1968 and 1969, three women were murdered. The cases of these women have never been solved, the killer of these women was given a nickname, Bible John.

Pat Docker

Pat Docker was the first of 'Bible John's'  known victims. Pat was a 25 year old nurse, she had a young son. Her naked body was found on 23rd February 1968, yards from her home. She had been raped and strangled. Her handbag and clothes were missing and to this day, have yet to be found.
The night before her body was discovered, Pat had left her son with her parents and gone out to enjoy a night out. Her parents thought she had gone to one club, but police later determined she had gone to another. The Barrowland Ballroom; in Glasgow. It is believed it was here she had met the man who would kill her.

Jemima McDonald

Eighteen months after Pat Docker's murder, 32 year old Jemima's body was found. Sadly it was Jemima's own sister who discovered her body. She had become concerned about Jemima; and after hearing rumours of some youngsters discovering a body, she went to the building and found her. Jemima had been raped, strangled and beaten to death. She was fully clothed.
It came to light that much like Pat Docker, Jemima had been to Barrowland on the night of her murder. Witnesses came forward to say they had seen her leaving with a man. Jemima had three children.

Helen Puttock

On 31st October 1969, 29 year old Helen Puttock's body was discovered in her own back garden. She had been raped and strangled, her handbag was also missing.
Helen had attended the Barrowland with her sister on the night of her murder. They had met a man named 'John' and had shared a taxi, her sister was dropped off first and Helen carried on in taxi with 'John'.
With information given by Helen's sister, who had spent some time with the suspect, that police were able to put together a description of the suspect.
It was from the details Helen's sister gave, that the killer was given the name 'Bible John'. She recalled he had quoted lines from the bible and was well spoken. She also described him as a tall, well-dressed young man with fair hair.

Similarities

There were many similarities between the cases;

- All the women had attended Barrowland Ballroom on the night of their murders

- They all had witnesses that said they left with a man

- The women's handbags were missing

- Victims had been strangled with their stockings

- They were all killed close to their homes

- All three victims had been raped

- The women were all menstruating at the time of their deaths

My Views

I have seen and read a lot about this case. One theory I think seems plausible is that a convicted killer, Peter Tobin, is Bible John. I will be covering Peter Tobin in a future post and to me, he IS a likely suspect. Some of the reasons for me believing he is a viable suspect are...

-The photo-fit of Bible John has a likeness to how Peter Tobin looked in the 1960's

-Apparently Tobin was a religious man

-A woman has alleged she was raped by Tobin after meeting him at Barrowland

-He had apparently left Glasgow in 1969, when the murders ended

-He was convicted of murdering three women, but is suspected of killing many more

Some people don't believe the murders of these three women were committed by the same person, but I believe there are too many similarities for them not to have been. Sadly I don't think this case will be solved, as so much time as passed. It's so sad that three women were murdered, and their families - especially their children; have never had any justice.

Any views on this case? Let me know in the comments.

  3. These are the type of YouTube videos I spend hours watching. I love a good murder mystery or conspiracy theory. You're right, there are too many similarities for them to be different cases with different killers. It's a shame this is unlikely to ever be solved, it almost seems disrespectful to the women who were murdered but that's unfortunately how it goes sometimes. Fab post, would love to read more of these!

  8. Very intruiging. For some reason crime has always been an interest of mine. I think it's mainly about what would move somebody to do anything like that. The psychology behind it and motive. Good post hun!

    1. That's what I like about most of these cases, but these type of ones where you don't know for sure who the killer is intrigue me 💕

  10. Oh gosh this is so sinister! It definitely sounds like all of them were committed by the same man, I find these cases so interesting to read about but also so sad, those poor women and their families! What a sick and twisted person it takes to do this.

  14. I love crime stories and murder mysteries there care definitely similarities in the cases and I like it theory of it being Peter Tobin as it does seem likely.

  15. There seem to be quite a lot of similarities in those crimes but the Police probably didn't have the tools or the means to find evidence. Luckily, a lot of progress has been made since then!
