An Internet Love Triangle Ends In Murder

This is by far one of the most weird and complex stories I have heard about. A internet love triangle filled with lies and deceit, ending with the murder of a 22 year old man. He was killed because of a person that didn't even exist in reality, by a 47 year old man who himself was deceitful and had created an alternative personality/life online.

Thomas Montgomery in prison.
MarineSniper & Talhotblond

Thomas Montgomery was a married man with teenage children, but that didn't seem to phase him when he began an online relationship with a young woman online. Her online name was Talhotblond and she was 18, Thomas pretended he was a young marine getting ready to go to Iraq. His screen name was MarineSniper. It was so far from the truth of his life, he worked in a factory in Buffalo, USA.
They exchanged messages and pictures Thomas sending an outdated picture of himself. The relationship between them grew quite intense and Talhotblond who told Thomas (or Tommy as he called himself to her) revealed her name to be Jessi. Jessi also sent Thomas underwear and gifts to his marital home.

Thomas Montgomery's Wife Discovers the Relationship

One day one of Thomas's daughters was on the computer when a message arrived from Jessi. This led to his wife discovering all kinds of proof of her husbands betrayal, including the underwear Jessi had sent, love letters and photographs.
She wrote to Jessi to explain who 'Tommy' really was, including a picture of him with his wife and children. Jessi stopped the relationship immediately.

Brian Barrett & Jessi Meet

After all the lies were revealed to Jessi she messaged a co-worker of Thomas, 22 year old Brian Barrett whose screen name was Beefcake, to find out the truth about Thomas. This led to Brian and Jessi beginning an online relationship as he was truthful with her and closer to her age. This relationship caused Thomas to seethe with jealousy and he sent numerous threatening messages saying he would make Brian pay. At some point Jessi did start talking to Thomas again but then she stopped again.

Murder

The breaking point for Thomas Montgomery seemed to be when he discovered that Brian was planning to go and meet Jessi. On September 15th 2006 as Brian left work he was shot 3 times. Thomas quickly became a suspect in the killing, and when they couldn't find him they feared for the safety of Jessi.

The Shocking Truth About Jessi

Police travelled to the home of Jessi, where they discovered a truly shocking and disturbing truth. 'Jessi' was actually a middle aged woman. She had been using pictures of her own daughter to create an alternative life online. The woman was not charged with anything, she hadn't actually broke any laws, well not criminal ones anyway.

Plea and Sentence

Thomas Montgomery pled guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

My Views

This is a truly baffling case and shows how people behave online can affect real life as well. Its such a shame that the only truthful person in this story, Brian, was killed by someone trying to live out some kind of fantasy. I also cant believe that the woman involved didn't face any charges, even though she didn't do anything criminal according to the law, she certainly contributed to the whole situation, and using her own daughters pictures to live out this fantasy is just plain wrong. There is a movie about this case called Talhotblond which is worth a watch.

If you have any views on this case please let me know in comments.

  3. This has to be one of the strangest stories I've ever heard! And it's real too! Honestly, it makes me realise all over again what a dangerous place the Internet can be. I have a seven year old daughter and it scares me to think that she could get caught up in something like this one day. Thank you for such a thought provoking post.

  6. My mom and I just had a conversation the other day about the difference in real life and virtual reality. So many people these days are getting so wrapped up in what goes on online that they forget what’s real and give up all common sense. This is truly a sad story.

  7. I really need to start watching this kind of documentaries. I think cheating on your partner is never a good idea and when it leads to some internet triangle it is even worth coz that you can no longer find boundaries between real life and virtual life
